Filament Guide

Choosing the right filament matters. Here's what each type is good for and when to use it.

Filament Best For Difficulty Strength Notes
PLA Figurines, decor, prototypes Beginner Moderate Most popular filament. Easy to print, biodegradable, great detail. Not heat-resistant.
PETG Functional parts, outdoor items Beginner High Stronger and more flexible than PLA. Good chemical and UV resistance. Slightly stringy.
ABS Mechanical parts, automotive Intermediate High Heat-resistant and durable. Needs an enclosure and good ventilation. Can warp.
TPU Phone cases, gaskets, grips Intermediate Flexible Rubber-like flexible filament. Great for things that need to bend or absorb impact.
ASA Outdoor parts, enclosures Intermediate High Like ABS but UV-resistant. Perfect for anything that lives outside.
Nylon Gears, hinges, tools Advanced Very High Extremely strong and wear-resistant. Absorbs moisture, needs dry storage.
PLA+ Everything PLA does, but stronger Beginner Moderate-High Enhanced PLA with better layer adhesion and impact resistance. Our go-to for most prints.
Silk PLA Display pieces, gifts Beginner Moderate Shiny, metallic finish. Looks premium but slightly weaker than regular PLA.
Our Recommendation: Start with PLA or PLA+ for most projects. Move to PETG when you need durability, and TPU when you need flexibility. We use all of these daily and can print in any of them for custom orders.

Essential Accessories

Upgrades and tools that make a real difference in print quality and workflow.

Filament Dryer

Wet filament causes stringing, popping, and weak prints. A filament dryer keeps your material in top condition. Essential for PETG, Nylon, and TPU.

Build Plates

PEI spring steel sheets are the go-to upgrade. Prints stick when hot and pop off when cool. Textured plates add a professional matte finish to the bottom of your prints.

Hardened Steel Nozzles

Standard brass nozzles wear out fast with abrasive filaments like carbon fiber or glow-in-the-dark. A hardened nozzle lasts much longer and maintains accuracy.

Deburring Tools

Clean up print edges, remove support marks, and smooth rough spots. A basic deburring knife and flush cutters are cheap and make a huge difference in finish quality.

Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)

Clean your build plate with IPA before every print for best adhesion. 90% or higher concentration works best. A small spray bottle keeps it convenient.

Enclosures

Keep drafts away from your prints and maintain consistent temperature. Required for ABS and ASA, helpful for everything else. Many printers now come enclosed.

Common Questions

Answers to what people ask us most often

What's the best first 3D printer?

For most people, the Bambu Lab A1 Mini or P1S. They work great out of the box with minimal setup. If budget is tight, a Creality Ender 3 V3 is a solid starting point, but expect more tinkering.

PLA vs PETG - which should I use?

PLA for anything decorative or that stays indoors. PETG for anything functional, outdoors, or that needs to handle some stress. PLA is easier to print, PETG is more durable.

How much does 3D printing cost?

A basic printer starts around $200. Filament runs $15-30 per kg, and a typical print uses $0.50-5 worth of material. Electricity cost is minimal. The real investment is time and learning.
